2019 Mercedes E Class Cabriolet. Set to arrive in U.S. dealerships for the 2019 model year, the E Class Cabriolet shares styling cues with its Coupe sibling. However,a big change compared to its predecessor has occurred under the skin. Unlike the previous model, the new E Class Cabriolet shares underpinnings with the brand-new E Class sedan, which rides on a rear-wheel drive architecture, dubbed MRA, that’s lighter and extremely flexible. This is a big deal for the midsize drop-top, which previously sat on the same platform as the C-Class, making it rather short and cramped compared to its competitors. In 2018, the E Class sedan and wagon is completely redone from grille to tailpipe. Because this revamp is just a year old, we expect nothing new from these models in 2019. The coupe and convertible models, however, will get their redesigns to match the sedan and wagon in 2019.

The current E Class sedan and wagon gained a new look that includes an elongated hood, a coupe-like roofline, sharp body lines, new lighting, and larger dimensions. We expect all this to carry into the 2019 Mercedes E Class Cabriolet without any changes on the sedan and wagon. The coupe and convertible, however, will take on all-new appearances to match the sedan and wagon. The same goes for the interior, which was equally overhauled with its all-new look, standard 12.3-inch central screen, touch-sensitive steering wheel buttons, and more. With no changes to its appearance, we also expect the same to ring true in its standard equipment. Given this proves true, look for the 2019 E300 (the base model) to continue to come standard with LED headlights, automatic wipers, heated mirrors, a sunroof, dual-zone automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, folding rear seats, and more.

The IIHS hasn’t completed testing on the new-generation E Class, but the previous generation was a Top Safety Pick Plus, and we believe E Class will be as safe or safer. The current E Class has a slew of premium safety features, including a crash-prediction system that clinches the seat belts, adjusts the passenger seats, and closes the windows when it senses a crash is coming. The sound system also emits a special tone to relax the ear drums to limit potential hearing damage. Finally, there is optional automatic emergency braking. These will all carry into the 2019 Mercedes E Class Cabriolet unchanged.

At launch, the 2019 Mercedes E Class Cabriolet will get the bi-turbo, 3.0-liter V-6 engine rated at 328 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. This version will probably be sold as the E400 and E400 4Matic in the U.S. Speaking of 4Matic, the new 2019 Mercedes E Class Cabriolet is also the first E Class drop-top to become available with the company’s all-wheel-drive system. In addition, the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission will be standard. Mercedes didn’t have much else to say about the drivetrain, but it’s safe to assume that other engine will be offered in the future. An AMG version with a bi-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8 with more than 550 horsepower will probably arrive in 2019, but a four-cylinder version is also likely, at least in Europe. For reference, other E Class models get the turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder rated at 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, as well as a diesel, 2.0-liter with 184 horses and 221 pound-feet.

While none of these engines are likely to find their way into the convertible, Mercedes could offer the more powerful 3.0-liter six-cylinder oil burner with 258 horsepower and 457 pound-feet of twist. Finally, the hybrid combining the a four-cylinder with an electric motor for a total output of 279 horsepower and 442 pound-feet is also on the table. The redesigned convertible feature the same steel-spring suspension with selective damping developed for the sedan. Optionally, customers will be able to select the Air Body Control suspension, a multi-chamber air suspension that controls how firmly the springs react to the road. An industry-first feature, it comes with all-around self-leveling for improved comfort and its ground clearance can be increased at the push of a button.

Unlike the standard suspension, which has only the Comfort and Sport modes, the Air Body Control gets four settings: Comfort, ECO, Sport, and Sport+. On top of the numerous airbags that come with any modern Mercedes, the 2019 Mercedes E Class Cabriolet gets the innovative Drive Pilot feature, which enables the car to follow the vehicle in front at speeds of up to 130 mph. The systems use automatic braking and accelerating, as well as the Steering Pilot to handle moderate bends. A Speed Limit Pilot function automatically adjusts the car’s speed according to on-the-road speed limits detected by a camera. These features are part of the optional Driver Assistance Package Plus. Other driver assistance systems will include Active Brake Assist, Attention Assist, and Remote Parking Pilot.

Based on production estimates, we expect to see the 2019 Mercedes E Class Cabriolet in showrooms this summer. With no changes in the works, we expect pricing for the carryover versions of the 2019 E Class to remain very close to the 2018 model, which ranges from $53,075 to $73,325 (destination fees included). As for the new models the coupe, convertible, and E63 S.
